Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and, with over 12 million people in the official metropolitan area alone, is probably the most populated urban area in the world. Greater Tokyo has a population of about 35 million people. This huge, wealthy and fascinating metropolis combines high tech visions of the future with glimpses of old Japan, and definitely has something for everyone. Over 400 years old, the city of Tokyo grew from the modest fishing village of Edo, to the magnificent city it is today. The metropolitan centre of the country, Tokyo is the destination for business, education, modern culture and government. In Japan, all roads, rails, shipping lanes and planes lead to Tokyo. You can easily reach Tokyo by plane, car, train, bus and boat. To get around in Tokyo, you will make use of the train, subway, JR train, ( these are free with a Japan Rail Pass), taxi, car, bus, ferry, bicycle and on foot. There are so many things to see and do in Tokyo, that it is impossible to include all of them. While there, treat yourself to a sushi breakfast at the Tsukiji Fish market, take a boat ride on the Sumida River, experience the neon jungle outside all the major train stations in the evenings, absolutely awesome. You can also go to an amusement park such as Tokyo Disney Resort, which consists of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Sea, which are the worlds most visited and second most visited theme parks respectively. For tourists wanting Japanese knick-knacks to take home, the best places to shop are Nakamise in Asakusa and the Oriental Bazaar in Omotesando. Here you will find things like Kanji-emblazoned T-shirts, foreign-sized kimonos, ninja outfits for children and ersatz samurai swords that are surprisingly difficult to find anywhere else. Both these places also have a wonderful selection of antiques. Hot Pepper, available in various editions around Tokyo, is a free magazine offering a guide to local restaurants in Japanese, but provides pictures and maps to the restaurants. Most restaurants in the magazine are mid-range to high-end and some of them even offer coupons. Look for bento shops, like Hokka-Hokka-Tei, which sell take-out lunch boxes. They range in quality and price, but most offer good, basic food a reasonable price. This is very popular with students and office workers. Noodle shops, curry shops and bakeries are often the option for good cheap food, and they are everywhere. For something more Japanese, try one of the local fast food giants, Matsuya, Yoshinoya or Ootoya. For just under 500 Yen you can get a giant bowl of meat, rice and vegetables sometimes with an egg as well. Tokyo has the worlds highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants, with prices to match, but eating at one of these restaurants is worth it, even if you are on a tight budget. For up market Japanese eateries, try Ginza, Akasaka and Roppongi Hills, all very expensive, but delicious food that will never be forgotten. People in Tokyo like to party and you will find good little bars and restaurants everywhere. There are thousands of hotels in the Tokyo area, ranging from cheap to very expensive and are distributed throughout the city with some cheap and some expensive almost everywhere. Much of Tokyo’s budget accommodation can be found in the Taito area. Capsule hotels are usually the cheapest option but most capsule hotels are men-only. Asakusa Riverside and Akihabara Capsule Inn are among the very few who have women-only floors. There is a large variety of mid-range hotels in Tokyo, but most of the hotels are rated three stars or more. Some hotels one should try are, the B Akasaka Hotel, Peninsula Hotel, Tokyo Dome Hotel, Century Southern Tower Hotel and the Mitsui Garden Hotel. Most luxury hotels can be found in western Shinjuku, around Tokyo station and in Akasaka. These hotels are expensive and most of the high-end international hotel chains are represented.
