Learn About Hong Kong

Bites of Hong Kong

June 19, 2008 by natashachia
Hello lovies, I’ve returned in a shower of Cantonese and acid rain.
I didn’t really intend to say much about my trip, but after a few worried smses asking whether I was alive or sleeping with the fishes I decided to make my presence felt.
Oh and there is absolutely NO INNUENDO regarding the ‘sleeping with the fishes’ thingy ok? Fish and I are like…. oh get your mind out of the gutter. If your mind is in a Hong Kong gutter it is flooded anyway.
10 days in Hong Kong really isn’t that long a time, but it was long enough for me to learn a little about it. So I’ll make a list, and read it well so that if any of you clueless people go to Hong Kong you will not get culture shock like I did.
5 Things I Learnt About Hong Kong
1. Everybody smokes. Deal with it. If you’re a smoker you can bum a cigarette off a friendly face. If you’re not, don’t bother coughing ostentatiously. Nobody cares about you. This is Hong Kong.
2. If you are walking along the street and you see a little old lady walking along the same pavement in the opposite direction, DON’T GIVE WAY. Push, shove, kick, rotate your hips like Ricky Martin at a hula contest, whatever – just squeeze your way past. Once you give way half the street will be pouring through that gap and you will be standing there like a lamp post. Stand there a little longer and a dog will start marking territory on your motionless legs.
3. For some strange reason, only tourists wear shorts in Hong Kong. I mean, I wasn’t even wearing micro shorts or something; they were about a hands-width above the knee. And then I went into the MTR (that’s like an MRT for the unitiated) and everyone was goggling* at me and I thought hey did I grow a penis or whatttt but I realized no other female in the train was wearing shorts. So I kept my eyes peeled for the rest of the trip and have to come to the conclusion that if I wear shorts people speak to me in English and when I wear jeans people ask for directions in Cantonese.
4. Nerdy black glasses in Singapore = cool fashion accessory in Hong Kong. That’s right, you naysayers who told me to change my specs. I was part of the cool crowd for 10 days. Well, at least when I wasn’t wearing shorts.
5. Egg tarts are cheap. Nyam nyam.
*Don’t know what ‘goggling’ means? Well then, you can Google ‘goggle’. Hahaha. Ok that was sooo unneccessary la. No more, I promise.
Ok and now for mandatory photos in random order, depending on what I feel like showing.

My fellow princess friends. Yeah, we were just chillin’. Note Mulan at the edge of the pic. She actually isn’t officially a Disney princess, but they make a big deal out of her in Hong Kong. So we let her hang with us.

Belle. She ditched us at the parade after-party for her boyfriend. Not cool. I tell you ever since her boyfriend got the surgery she’s been like sooo whatever.

One of my many houses. Just kidding. The place I stayed in Hong Kong actually looks something like….

… this. Yeah. This is actually my aunt’s place at Kennedy Town. Not the whole buiding, I mean. Just one aparment. But it was really clean on the inside. I kinda liked it there. Until someone on the fifth floor died and stank up the lift with the smell.

Yeah that’s right. Just a nice little old lady we saw at Ocean Park… with PUNK EARS. Way to go, granny-o. Rock loves you, baby. (Photo courtesy of unsuspecting lady and sister’s phone cam.) She was the coolest thing we saw at Ocean Park.

This shot was surreptitiously snapped at Temple Street. I know what you guys are thinking. And I totally agree. Where else but in a Hong Kong street market would you see a rubber penis green tomato?!

Last but not least, a photo of my lunch at Ocean Park. What it was supposed to be, we will never know.

Life in research sure is boring and tough. For the past few weeks, I have been playing with anemometers (not the cup kind that spin around doing nothing). This is supposedly worth 2000 pounds, way too expensive if you ask me, but then i would not be able to do my project without it. Frankly, my project is not going anywhere and after failing to get any result after running dozens of simulations, I decided I should share my feeling with everyone about it. @*>$@#)!@#(*……..Yep research sucks.
