Media Server - Definition
A Media Server, is a network element, deployed in Enterprise and Service Provider voice networks, which supplies media related functions such as media manipulation (e.g. voice stream mixing) and playing of tones and announcements.
Under the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) definitions, a Media Server is defined as an MRF (Media Resource Function). Each MRF is further divided into a Media Resource Function Controller (MRFC) and a Media Resource Function Processor (MRFP). The MRFC is a signalling plane node that acts as a SIP User Agent to the S-CSCF, and which controls the MRFP with a H.248 interface.
