Business traveller

Business traveller : siapa bilang enak ?

Jadi business traveller itu sepertinya keren. Pulang pergi ke luar negeri, paspor ganti berkali-kali karena habis distempel. Top marktob pokoknya. Sebagian bener, tapi mungkin banyak yang gak tahu kalau travel itu perlu pengorbanan juga. Minimal lebih banyak menghabiskan waktu di jalan dibanding keluarga sendiri plus berbagai pengalaman yang amit2. Ini daftar yang tidak enak-nya :


Kalau penerbangan jam 7 pagi, berangkat dari rumah minimal jam setengah lima pagi, bangunnya tebak sendiri.
Antrian chek-in di airport panjang bisa seperti ular
Bawa uang, minimal 2-3 juta, maklum uang kita gak ada harganya di luar sana.
Bahu pegel karena bawa2 laptop
Nunggu boarding, mending kalau gak delay atau pesawatnya cancel
Pesawat sudah di runway, eh balik lagi karena ada kerusakan mesin, nunggu lagi berjam-jam.
Kalau harus transit minimal 1 jam, bisa 6 jam lebih. Bengong di airport karena mau jalan2 juga sudah capek. Pernah tidur di kursi airport Changi karena pesawat ke Jakarta baru ada jam 7 pagi.
Kalau ke Amerika paling sengsara, duduk di kursi pesawat hampir 18 jam.
Kalau kelasnya ekonomi lebih payah bila orang duduk di sebelah badannya gede dan menghabiskan tempat.
Yang menyebalkan lagi, penumpang di belakang kita menghalangi dengan kakinya agar kita tidak bisa memundurkan kursi. Aarrrgh.
Buat yang sering travel, makanan di pesawat adalah siksaan karena rasanya standard. Bawa sambal sachet, itu tip saya.
Karena tidak boleh bawa air mineral selama penerbangan, saya sering kehausan karena kebiasaan minum banyak.
Paling asyik kalau ada bayi yang nagis kenceng dan lama pas kita lagi ngantuk. Mau marah gimana ?
Pesawatnya goyang2 karena turbulence, naik turun gak keruan, rekor turbulen terlama : 20 menit !
Pas tiba di tujuan, badan sudah kayak robot, mata cekung karena kurang tidur, belum mandi. Wuuuiijh.
Ngantri lagi di imigrasi, panjaaaang banget.
Petugas imigarsi suka curiga sama orang Indonesia karena disangka teroris, apalagi di Amerika. Paspor dibolak balik cari kesalahan, matanya melototin kita. R u speak English ?Yes sir, of course. (plus bahasa Sunda tentunya)
Nunggu lagi di belt conveyor dalam lautan bagasi warna biru dan hitam (makanya pake koper warnanya pink supaya jelas kali ya)
Nyampe juga akhirnya. Jangan berharap ada yang jemput, pake taksi sendiri.
Sebagus-bagusnya hotel yang ditinggali hanyalah sebuah kotak persegi, terkurung seharian.
Jet lag musuh utama. Barusan tidur di pesawat, eh sudah waktunya tidur lagi, go figure! Semalaman bisa bangun berkali-kali. Saat jet lag bulan lagi masalah, harus balik ke Indonesia dan penderitaan baru dimulai lagi.
Ngantuk musuh lain karena penerbangan antar benua. Pas lagi meeting yang dipikiran adalah empuknya bantal dan kasur di kamar hotel. Swear, ngantuknya tidak tertahan apalagi dengerin orang pidato.
Tinggal di hotel berbintang, tapi dipake buat tidur doang karena seharian sudah dihabiskan dengan pekerjaan.
Pulang ke hotel pasti selalu di atas jam 10 kadang lewat tengah malam karena biasanya harus dinner dan ngobrol2.
Pernah dipelototin sama Secret Service di NY pas Al Gore tinggal di hotel yang sama karena salah masuk lift.
Pack & unpack koper kalau harus singgal di berbagai kota. Kadang kalau sudah males, barang bawaan boro2 di susun rapi. Jejalkan.
Kalau makan di restoran sering gagal pesan alias tidak sesuai dengan selera. Pesen yang paling mahal pas datang cuma secuil menu dengan piring gede, rasanya asem pahit pula. Lapaaar.
Pulang nya sama, pemeriksaan keamanan di Airport Amerika pasti menyebalkan. Kalau kena random chek, pasti dapat perlakuan khusus alias di interogasi dulu.
Istri mau melahirkan saya ada luar, istri baru melahirkan saya harus berangkat. Tuh gak enak kan?
Oleh2nya mana? Mana sempet, c’mon ini kan lagi tugas, boro2 jalan2. Itu juga sering mepet waktunya.

Tips Traveling Hemat Di Jepang Dengan Pesawat Udara

Cara paling cost-efficient untuk berkeliling Jepang sebenarnya dilakukan dengan menumpang kereta api. Namun apabila Anda memiliki keterbatasan waktu, sementara Anda ingin melakukan eksplorasi sebanyak mungkin tatkala berada di Jepang dan memiliki cukup banyak bekal uang saku untuk perjalanan ini, tidak ada salahnya untuk menggunakan penerbangan domestik selama di Jepang, khususnya untuk perjalanan jarak jauh (misalnya dari Nagasaki di ujung selatan Kyushu ke Sapporo di Hokkaido). Jika jarak perjalanan tidak terlalu jauh, misalnya dari Tokyo ke Osaka, saya lebih menyarankan Anda untuk lebih baik menumbang Shinkansen daripada menumpang pesawat udara. Ini disebabkan, jarak yang harus Anda tempuh dari dan ke bandara di Tokyo dan Osaka, ditambah waktu tunggu penerbangan di masing-masing bandara, apabila dibandingkan dengan waktu yang dibutuhkan oleh kereta api Shinkansen untuk mencapai Tokyo – Osaka, secara keseluruhan justru lebih singkat waktu perjalanan dengan menggunakan Shinkansen. Sementara dari harga tiket, jelas harga tiket Shinkansen akan lebih murah daripada harga tiket pesawat.
Penerbangan domestik dari Tokyo ke kota-kota lain di Jepang, lebih banyak dilayani dari Haneda Airport. Jika Anda sudah berada di Tokyo, Haneda Airport bisa dengan mudah dicapai dengan menumpang Airport Limousine Bus, menumpang monorail dari Hamamatsucho Station (Yamanote Line), atau dari Shinagawa Station (Keikyu Line). Jika Anda berencana melanjutkan penerbangan lokal dari Narita Airport, maka Anda bisa menggunakan Airport Limousine Bus untuk bisa mencapai bandara Haneda.
Dua penerbangan domestik yang melayani hampir seluruh destinasi penerbangan di seluruh Jepang adalah Japan Airlines (JAL; tel. 0120/25-5971 toll-free di Japan;www.jal.co.jp) dan All Nippon Airways (ANA; tel. 0120/029-222 toll-free di Japan; www.anaskyweb.com). Harga tiket penerbangan domestik reguler diantara keduanya hampir tidak ada perbedaan. Meski demikian, harga tiket bisa berubah-ubah setiap saat, terutama menjelang dan saat peak season seperti saat liburan akhir tahun, Golden Week, dan liburan musim panas. Meski demikian, tiket pesawat dengan harga yang agak miring masih tersedia, terutama untuk penerbangan awal di pagi hari atau penerbangan terakhir di malam hari. Pembelian tiket jauh-jauh hari sebelum hari keberangkatan juga bisa memberikan Anda potongan harga yang lumayan. Demikian pula, pembelian tiket pulang pergi akan sedikit lebih murah daripada membeli tiket satu kali jalan.

Skymark (tel. 03/3433-7670 di Tokyo, atau 092/736-3131 di Fukuoka), adalah maskapai yang hanya melayani penerbangan di seputar Pulau Kyushu.
Skynet Asia Airways (tel. 03/5733-5859 di Tokyo), memiliki rute penerbangan dari dan ke Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, dan Miyazaki di Pulau Kyushu dengan Tokyo.
Air Do (tel. 0120/0570-333 toll-free), menerbangi beberapa destinasi di Pulau Hokkaido.
Sebagai ilustrasi, untuk perjalanan dari Tokyo (Honshu) ke Kagoshima (di ujung selatan Kyushu) dengan menumpang JAL (tiket satu kali jalan) dengan lama perjalanan 1 jam 45 menit, harga tiketnya adalah ¥35,700. Untuk rute perjalanan yang sama dengan menggunakan maskapai Skynet Asia Airways, harga tiket satu kali jalan adalah ¥28,500. Jika dibandingkan dengan menumpang kereta api satu kali jalan dengan lama perjalanan selama 9 jam, harga tiketnya mencapai ¥26,980. Nah, jika perbandingannya seperti ini, jelas lebih menguntungkan kalau Anda memilih untuk menumpang pesawat Skynet Asia daripada menggunakan moda transportasi lainnya.
Membeli tiket penerbangan domestik jauh-jauh hari dengan koneksi langsung ke penerbangan internasional Anda ke Jepang bisa merupakan salah satu cara untuk menghemat biaya perjalanan ke Jepang. Secara reguler JAL (Japan Airways) mengeluarkan tiket promo “oneworld Yokoso/Visit Japan Fare” yang harus dibeli secara bersamaan dengan international ticket ke Jepang. JAL adalah anggota dariONEWORLD (sebuah organisasi code-sharing) yang beranggotakan American Airlines, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Malev, Japan Airlines, Royal Jordanian dan LAN Argentina. Nah, jika Anda menumpang salah satu dari maskapai penerbangan anggota ONEWORLD tersebut, maka Anda bisa mendapatkan diskon ¥10,000 untuk setiap penerbangan domestik di Jepang dengan menumpang JAL termasuk dua maskapai anak perusahaannya yakni JAL Express dan Japan TransOcean Air yang secara keseluruhan melayani lebih dari 40 kota di Jepang. Promo tiket “oneworld Yokoso/Visit Japan Fare’ ini harus dibeli dari negara asal wisatawan, dan tidak dijual di dalam negeri Jepang sendiri.
Untuk wisatawan yang terbang menggunakan maskapai lain di luar anggota ONEWORLD, juga bisa memanfaatkan penawaran menarik dari JAL yang dinamakan “Welcome to Japan Fare,” dengan harga ¥13,650 per penerbangan, dengan minimal pembelian 2 buah tiket/orang.
Di lain pihak, maskapai ANA juga memberlakukan program promo yang mirip dengan yang dilakukan oleh JAL, namun untuk maskapai penerbangan yang berada di bawah bendera Star AllianceMaskapai yang menjadi anggota dari Star Alliance adalah Singapore Airlines, Continental Airlines, United Airlines, Air Canada, SWISS, Air New Zealand, Air China, Adria, Asiana Airlines, Austria Airlines, ANA, Croatian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Egypt Air, Scandinavian Services (SAS), Lufthansa, SpanAir, South African Airlines, Thai Airways, Shanghai Airlines.
Untuk tiket “Japan Airpass” yang diterbitkan oleh ANA, biayanya adalah ¥11,000 per penerbangan jika Anda terbang menggunakan ANA atau salah satu maskapai anggota Star Alliance. Jika Anda membeli “Japan Airpass” namun tidak melakukan penerbangan dengan maskapai anggota Star Alliance, maka harga tiketnya adalah ¥13,000.
Harap diingat, bahwa tiket promosi jenis ini tidak berlaku untuk masa-masa Peak Season seperti pada saat liburan musim panas (pertengahan Juli – akhir Agustus), liburan tahun baru, dan saat Golden Week.
Tiket promo yang dikeluarkan oleh JAL dan ANA tersebut adalah harga sebelum pajak bandara dan asuransi penerbangan. Anda harus membeli tiket penerbangan internasional menuju Jepang terlebih dulu sebelum bisa membeli tiket domestik promo.
Jika Anda berniat untuk memanfaatkan promo penerbangan hemat tersebut, sebaiknya pergunakan untuk perjalanan jarak jauh supaya manfaatnya lebih terasa., sementara untuk perjalanan jarak pendek atau menengah, lebih baik menumpang kereta api.

Six weeks ago, I went to downtown Seattle for an appointment at a big office building. The receptionist asked me to fill out a short medical history, which included questions about my self-esteem and physical appearance. After 10 minutes of waiting, I was ushered back into a small clinic down the hall.
Sounds like a personal problem, right? Well…
I was actually there for a hair-loss consultation, and as far as I can tell, my hair is doing just fine. According to the fake doctor I talked to (he wasn’t a real doctor, but wore a white coat to give the impression that he was), most of the men who come in for visits would be happy if they had half as much hair as me.
I thanked him for his time, and got out as quickly as I could. Earlier this week, six weeks after the consultation, 20,000 Delta SkyMiles posted to my account.
Yes, I went in for a hair-loss consultation to get 20,000 Frequent Flyer Miles – and so did a lot of other people. Hold that thought; we’ll come back to it at the end.
First, Let’s Look Back at the Unfriendly Travel Summer
We are now in global financial meltdown, it seems, but before the financial meltdown kicked into gear, the travel world was having its own meltdown a few months earlier.
Oil prices went to record highs, airlines started charging for any checked bags, and record numbers of flights were canceled even as planes were at high capacity.
In one of the crazier examples, United Airlines said it would start charging for meals on overseas flights from Washington, D.C. They later backed off, saying they were just “testing an idea to see how customers would respond,” a statement that a lot of travel writers had fun with. (Feel free to write your own joke about how easy it is to predict customer opinion when you take away meals on 8-hour flights.)
Meanwhile, I was happily traveling around the world, mostly on a Round-the-World ticket I had paid for nearly a year ago in the summer of 2007.
I don’t want to give the impression that it was always easy — I slept on the floor of too many airports to say that, unfortunately. But even though it wasn’t easy, for the most part I was largely unaffected by the unfriendly travel environment.
In a lot of ways, it’s easy to get frustrated with travel these days. Here are some practical things you can do to get ahead.
*Get an Elite Status Match with multiple airlines. If you have any kind of elite status with a major airline, you can use that status to get “comped” from several other airlines. To do this, make a photocopy of your status card, get a printout of a recent statement, and mail this information in to the Frequent Flyer headquarters of your preferred airline.
The catch is that you can usually only do this once in your lifetime per airline, but there are a few clever loopholes you can take advantage of. For example, right now you can get status matched with Northwest with no future penalty, since Northwest as a brand will cease to exist since they are merging with Delta.
*Get Creative with Lodging. Since most of my international travel is with Round-the-World tickets that I pay for well in advance, or Awards flights from my many Frequent Flyer miles (see below), lodging is my major expense from country to country.
I’ve adopted all of these tactics at different times to help:
  • Use Priceline to stay in nice hotels for an average of 40-60% off. Priceline is useless (mostly) for plane tickets, but helpful for hotels. I’ve lost count of the number of cheap rooms I’ve stayed in with them – at least about 20-30 so far on three continents.
  • Stay in hostels, but in your own room. Use Hostels.com to check for alternative lodging in your destination, including hostels, university rooms, and guesthouses.
  • Go off-the-grid. If you really want to get creative, you can stay for free with people all over the world who agree to share their couch. I usually prefer a bit more privacy, but for the desperate, this is an option.
*If your trip involves more than one international destination, consider a Round-the-World ticket or regional fare. This is how I do most of my long-haul travel now, and while it can get a bit complicated, it is hugely economical as long as you plan on doing a lot of travel. At some point I’ll create a detailed product to help people with this (there’s a lot to it), but for now if you’re out there working on a big trip and need some quick help, send me a note with the itinerary you have so far.
*Get as many bonus Frequent Flyer Miles as possible. Even though many airlines are trying their best to devalue miles, with enough planning and some persistence, you can still use them to fly for just the cost of the taxes. I do this several times a year, and I’ve used my miles to fly Upper Class on Virgin Atlanticand Business Class several times on Delta, Singapore, Lufthansa, and Korean Airlines.
Here are a few current, easy opportunities you can take advantage of to pick up miles right away with American Airlines (my preferred U.S. carrier, mostly due to how they structure their elite program):
  • One-Minute Bose Video. Watch this one-minute video, get 150 miles. If you live near a Bose store, you can get 350 more by checking out the headphones in person.
  • 1,500 Miles for Dining. Sign up here and go to a restaurant you might visit anyway. Spend more than $25 and you’ll get a 1,500 mileage bonus credited to you.
(Note that if you don’t have an American AAdvantage number, you’ll need to get one first – but you can do that here.)

These are just a few examples, and if you’re reading this later on, some of them may no longer be available. I’m not a big fan of wasting hours on surveys, but doing simple things like this every so often really adds up.
In recent years I’ve earned as many as 95,000 extra miles by the end of the year through these kinds of bonuses, not counting credit card spending or my actual flights. Since the average Business Class ticket to Asia costs at least $5,000, it’s definitely worth my time to get a free one.
880,000 Frequent Flyer Miles for a Few Close Friends
After my hair-loss consultation went well with no surprises (the total time investment was about one hour, including the ride to and from downtown), and I confirmed that the company didn’t really care who came in for the appointment, I started referring a few friends over that way. My friends reported back with the same information – it was quick and easy, and the company wasn’t offended that people were coming in just for the miles.
Next, I sent an email to the first group of customers from the Discount Airfare Guide. I figured they might be interested in 20,000 miles, and my expectation held true – reports of successful clinic visits came back from Atlanta, Vancouver, San Francisco, and elsewhere throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada.
Finally, I sent a notice out to my Twitter followers: “If anyone is willing to give up one hour for 20,000 Delta SkyMiles, write me at [email address].” A bunch of people requested the info, and several of them made their own appointments.
I asked that anyone who had their own hair-loss consultation for a free 20,000 SkyMiles let me know so that I could track how many Awards tickets I had effectively created. I don’t receive any benefit from it – I was just curious about the numbers. Judging from everyone who wrote me back, it looks like I successfully referred 44 people for a total of 880,000 Miles.
Here’s a quick overview of what 880,000 SkyMiles can be used for:
  • 4 Round-the-World Tickets
  • 18 Flights to Europe or 14 Flights to Africa
  • 7 Business Class Tickets to Asia on Singapore Airlines (nice)
  • 13 Flights to Australia (average price: $1500+)
  • 30 Flights within Asia on Korean Airlines
  • Multiple options for codeshare flights on China Airlines, Air France, and Northwest
Most people, however, will use the 20k miles for simple, domestic round-trip flights. At 25k per free ticket within the U.S. and Canada, the bonus takes you 80% of the way.
In other words, spreading the word about the hair-loss consultation earnedroughly 35 free tickets for my friends, Twitter followers, and Unconventional Guide customers – and this was with very little promotion, since I didn’t write about it here on the site.
This was an experiment that seems to have worked well. I don’t mind sharing the wealth with promotions like this in the future, but I probably won’t make a lot of posts about them here since it’s not really the theme of the site. Travel Survival
Note that none of these ideas are dependent on a friendly travel environment. You can still earn miles no matter what the airlines are doing, and if you can get elite status with at least one airline, you’ll avoid a lot of the new fees being charged for people who don’t travel much.
In short, travel does not have to be as difficult as some would have it. You may not be as crazy as me in terms of heading down for a hair-loss consultation, but I’m happy with my 20,000 miles. Next summer, maybe I’ll see you on a plane somewhere… and with luck, both of us will be flying for free.
